Was Triple H correct when he said if Orton loses this Sunday the last 7 months were for nothing?

I would have to say NO it wouldn't have been for nothing.

While in an obvious sense, you would think it would be for nothing, but the way Orton was built up, him losing wouldn't make the past 7 months worth nothing. They built Orton up to be a cold hearted killer with no remorse and it worked. The 7 month reign did a lot for Orton and had Orton not gotten injured at One Night Stand, there would have been plenty for them to build on to keep him in the title scene or at least keep him going strong. I'll give you some examples why it wouldn't have been for nothing had he not gotten injured....

* Dynamics Of His Character

What I mean is that regardless of how you (general sense) thought his push was done, one thing that can't be discredited or brushed away is the fact that Orton was the most steadily consistent heel character that didn't get the "I'm Sick Of This Shit" reaction, they actually boo'ed Orton because he was drawing natural heat. Whatever he did, you just hated it because he sucked you in.

* Fresh State In The Main Event/Title Scene On RAW

During Orton's reign the title/main event scene was fresh. More people tuned in to see the Orton/Hardy feud and even though it did fail, I'm pretty sure Orton/Jericho feud had a buzz. Having Orton reign as champion for those 7 months gave WWE a much needed breath of fresh air.

* Matured Orton

While none of us really know if Orton is bad backstage or not, the thing that rings true is that Orton has seemingly had a lot of growing up time during that 7 month period and in my opinion he has shown it because during the 7 months he's shown confidence that was lacking, he improved in the ring and on the mic.

There's more reasons, but these are the key reasons why I believe it wouldn't have been for nothing. Had it not been for the past 7 months, Orton wouldn't have matured into what he is now I believe.

If anything with Orton losing it makes the title scene/main event scene now worth nothing because its back to the same old stale bullshit that was going on before Orton's reign.

Was Triple H correct when he said if Orton loses this Sunday the last 7 months were for nothing? Absolutely not.

Let's get straight into this.

The Age of Orton began when Randy won the WWE Championship way back in October last year at No Mercy from Triple H - a legend in his own right. Few people had high expectations for him and the reign itself. 203 days later, he finally lost the title - in a match that didn't favour him at all. Was that all for nothing? Certainly not. Many people tipped him to lose at Survivor Series, then at Armageddon, then at the Royal Rumble, then at No Way Out, and then at Wrestlemania. Never had a champion been so under-favoured in years. Despite this, the WWE showed a lot of faith in the young man when others didn't, as he retained his title in each of those events. In doing so, he beat a 'who's who' of the WWE by defeating (or taking out, whether that was through the crippling punt to the head or the quick as lightning RKO) the likes of Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho, John Cena, Triple H and Jeff Hardy. This went a long to way to solidifying Orton's position in the main event and being in the position of the company's 'top dog'. He had to steady the ship that had sunk when Cena went down injured and help them recover from the big loss, and he did more than that.

He looked great as champion, coming across almost like a pyscho - a man who has a cold heart who didn't care for his actions - an awesome heel if you ask me, a persona that had been built up ever since that punt to the head that took out Shawn Michaels. During the time he spent as champion, Orton improved his mic skills GREATLY. Prior to his WWE Title win, many people believed Orton's promos were monotone and robotic-like. Orton really came into his own on the mic during his reign - showing real passion and emotion in his promos. He just grew and grew into his role, drawing huge heel heat ANYWHERE... another sign of an awesome heel. He was right up there with Edge as the greatest heel in the business. I myself am pretty sure he won a lot of people over during his reign, which is certainly not 'for nothing' as HHH incorrectly said.

Most of the matches he put on in his title defenses were either good to very good or great (both this year and last year) and overall, they were an improvement from when he was not champion. Firstly was the awesome wrestling contest at Survivor Series with Shawn Michaels, followed by a good bout with Chris Jericho at Armageddon. Orton followed this with a great feud with Jeff Hardy, culminating in a very good match at the Royal Rumble. The defense against Cena at No Way Out wasn't amazing, but it was good. Then of course there was the too-short but still very good Triple Threat at Wrestlemania 24.

If you need any further proof that Orton's reign as champion was for nothing then just look at his first and second title reigns. He won the World Title at Summerslam 2004, becoming the youngest world champion ever. Did it last long? Hell no. His face turn was botched and he lost the title just a mere 28 days later. Then came the 2nd reign. It lasted a full 24 minutes. 24 freakin' minutes. THOSE reigns were for nothing, and not his last one which lasted 7 MONTHS.

In closing, it is clear that Orton's 3rd reign as a world champion was clearly not for nothing. In those 203 days in which he pretty much carried the company, his mic skills and overall match quality increased, and increased a lot. His dominant reign really cemented his place at the top and putting on those great matches and feud won over a lot of fans as well as many higher-ups in the WWE. He won so much faith during his reign, that a 4th, 5th, even 6th title reign in the future has a high possibility of happening. The Age of Orton is sure to be among us in the near future, but only because of his great reign and maturity shown as WWE Champion.
