WEEK FOUR: WRAPPING UP 2007 IN FASION!
------------------------
------------------------
i$e says:
John.
Diesel says:
'Roundtable'
i$e says:
You read my mind.
Diesel says:
I saw it in the way you said 'John.'
i$e says:
Brothers. Right, it's time. We should really deliver on that hype. How about UFC 79 discussion and a brief wrap up of the year?
Diesel says:
Sounds good.
i$e says:
Shit, John. Guess who just called?
Diesel says:
'The Greatest Fighter Of All Time' Mark Hunt?
i$e says:
Close. 'AMPLine4Life' actually. He's with that 'NCIH' guy, showing him some basic MMA videos to get him started.
Diesel says:
'AMP'
Diesel says:
'NCIH'
Diesel says:
Welcome, brothers.
NCIH says:
'Roundtable'
AMP says:
'Roundtable'
Diesel says:
'Roundtable'
i$e says:
Thats the spirit. We thought that the first Roundtable of 2008 should include some lovely guests. They won't be regular fixtures as that would take away from the main attractions. With that done, lets get serious. Guys - did UFC 79 deliver?
NCIH says:
In one word....absolutely.
AMP says:
'Iceman' vs. 'Axe Murderer' = 'Awesomeness'
Diesel says:
IT SUCKED DICK.
Diesel says:
Actually, it was good.
i$e says:
Swerve.
Diesel says:
inorit.
AMP says:
We're talking about the PPV, not the strippers at the Studio 54 after-party, Diesel
Diesel says:
i$e says:
I went to that.
NCIH says:
I went to GSP's afterparty.
Diesel says:
I'm not sure about you guys, but during I think round 2 of Chuck/Silva, I was brought back to UFC 47, where Chuck had Tito against the fence and just firing blows.
i$e says:
Silva proved he has a Mark Hunt level chin in that fight, if nothing else.
AMP says:
Pretty sure you're thinking about the 3rd round Diesel. But yes, I had that exact same thought. Pretty pissed that Chuck didn't finish him. I'm not sure if it was Silva's desire not to be knocked out of if Chuck has lost some of his power but it was still a pretty awesome fight, possible fight of the year given the backstory.
NCIH says:
The main card was more good than bad. The co-main events were outstanding. GSP owning up Hughes for 9:54 was a treat to watch. Hopefully that will put Hughes' attitude in check...but not likely. Liddell vs Silva was a brawl, that put Liddell back onto the map. And he even had a few takedowns.
NCIH says:
I'd put it into the top 3, for best fights for 2007.
i$e says:
It's probably my favourite fight of the year.
Diesel says:
Big words, considering what was presented this year.
AMP says:
I think guys like Huerta, Griffin, Edgar, and Guida had more exciting fights but there wasn't much to them like there was in Liddell/Silva. I would say Liddell vs. Silva or Griffin vs. Shogun was my favorite fight of the year. Maybe not the best in terms of the actual fight but given the backstory and everything, it's tough to argue against those two.
i$e says:
Couture/Sylvia is worth a mention.
NCIH says:
That fight happened in 2007? Couture vs Sylvia feels like forever ago. Wow, what an amazing year of fights.
i$e says:
March I believe.
Diesel says:
Which brings us to my next topic...
Diesel says:
2007 - Best year for UFC?
AMP says:
Likely. I think a lot of big potential match ups got screwed over though thanks to MMA being real. If you're talking in terms of booking and cashed raked in, I think 2006 was a better year. But 2007 was a good year in terms of excitement (thanks to the Lightweight Division returning) and just overall quality.
NCIH says:
Hands down, no question.
i$e says:
Easily, both in terms of the product delivering a range of amazing fights in every weight class, as well as the increased level of exposure the sport is getting. It dissapoints me that some of the newer fans are quick to dickride the new stars and equally quick to dismiss the guys that bought the show to the dance, but I'll take that over the possibility of the sport dying due to lack of interest.
Diesel says:
It truly is a case of taking the good with the bad, if that saying ever rang true.
NCIH says:
The UFC made such huge steps in terms of the mainstream. Getting ESPN to cover you, was enormous. I would love to see ESPN get some analysts, and possibly a weekly show. The UFC just cracked the ice, as far as mainstream goes.
NCIH says:
Let's not forget the cover of a Sports Illustrated, either.
i$e says:
I'll take 2007 over 2006 because I care more about the quality of the fights.
NCIH says:
I agree. From the point of quality fights, I will gladly stand behind 2007.
AMP says:
It's not like 2006 didn't deliver in the quality department though.
i$e says:
Not at all, but 2007 had Randy Couture.
AMP says:
2006 had Randy Couture
i$e says:
Did 2006 have Randy Couture owning Tim 'Boring' Sylvia and Gabriel 'I can't see' Gonzaga?
i$e says:
I think not.
AMP says:
2006 had Randy at every UFC event, 2007 did not.
i$e says:
Randy sux
Diesel says:
I think we all agree that 2007 was a great year in the end though. Which leads me to ask; best event of the year? Worst event of the year? And for what reasons?
NCIH says:
Best - TUF Season 6 Finale. OMFG. Huerta vs Guida. Rollins vs War Machine.
NCIH says:
From the top to bottom, that was that best show.
NCIH says:
Worst - 73. Very disappointing. A draw, a Title fight between Steroid Users, and a somewhat average showing by Big Nog
Diesel says:
I'd say 72 was worse that 73 personally. 73 atleast had titles at line.
NCIH says:
Everyone figured that 72 wouldn't be that great. 73 was supposed to be great, but it completely bombed.
Diesel says:
True enough.
AMP says:
73 was worse than 72 for the reason that 73 didn't had a memorable fight like 72 had Griffin vs. Guida, which is possibly the fight of the year.
i$e says:
I agree, I'm still pissed that Guida wasn't awarded the win for that fight.
i$e says:
73 was pretty embarrassing from a PR standpoint. Don't hype your show up to be 'STACKED' then have it come out as a total fucking disaster.
Diesel says:
73 displayed the pimp-ness known as Anderson 'The Spider' Silva, though.
NCIH says:
If 73 didn't feature Silva, it would have been terrible.
NCIH says:
Silva made it at least somewhat decent.
Diesel says:
Diesel says:
What about the greatness known as 74? Where does that stand?
i$e says:
74 was a good event, I enjoyed it. People overate the Koscheck/Pierre fight though. It wasn't that good.
NCIH says:
74 was a good PPV. Couture dominating a top 5 heavyweight, was increidble. GSP returning was fun to watch. Plus, you had Alexander destroying some scrub.
i$e says:
Alexander was at 74?
Diesel says:
lol nub
NCIH says:
...oops...75
i$e says:
lol nub fan
AMP says:
Nice memory. And Gonzaga is not a Top 5 Heavyweight
i$e says:
This is why Mike won't be a regular folks. Damn 'new' MMA fans!
NCIH says:
Gonzaga is a top 5 heavyweight in the UFC.
i$e says:
Last time I checked, Couture was numbers one to five in the 'top 5' heavyweight' list.
Diesel says:
MIRKO CRO COP [/mark]
i$e says:
I have a question for you boys; if Dana can learn one thing from this year and improve it for 2008, what would it be?
AMP says:
BOOK FIGHTS WHEN YOU FUCKING HAVE THEM~!
i$e says:
Valid.
NCIH says:
Do not put your better divisions on ice. I thought he learned his lesson with the Welterweight divison, but I guess not. Putting the Light Heavyweight division on ice is beyond stupid.
NCIH says:
The only way he could top this, was by putting the Lightweight division on ice.
AMP says:
No one (and by no one I mean the casual fans who buy the PPVs) gives a fuck about the lightweight division.
NCIH says:
They will.
Diesel says:
I'd say cut back on some events. Sometimes events were like 2 weeks apart. Did anyone else sort of feel 'rushed' into some PPVs/live shows?
AMP says:
There was that point from August to September where they did 3 events.
Diesel says:
Prime example.
NCIH says:
Yes. The 74-Fight Night-75 stretch was bad.
AMP says:
But yeah, they should cut back on some events. Problem is with so much talent under contract and everyone wanting a fight so they can climb the ladder, it's tough not to book event after event.
i$e says:
Fair points. Personally, I'd like him to take a page out of PRIDE's books and up the ante on the live production values. It's all very 'underground' still, especially when you think of what they could do; Fighter ceromony, maybe some fucking pyrotechnics? All we get is a 'Mickeys Replay' and crowd panning.
NCIH says:
I'm actually not bothered by the lack of productions. The fireworks remind me too much of wrestling.
i$e says:
It worked for PRIDE.
NCIH says:
Before or after the UFC bought them?
Diesel says:
Holy mother of
OWNED.
Diesel says:
It's difficult to compare the PRIDE production to UFC production, because it's a COMPLETELY different culture.
AMP says:
I never liked that about PRIDE, tbc. As I was watching Yarennoka the other morning, I actually hated it.
i$e says:
Fuck you guys. I loved the whole showmanship aspect of it.
NCIH says:
After watching M-1's show, the Japanese culture frustrates me. What was up with Kaz Masaki grabbing a mic, and belittling his opponent?
i$e says:
Didn't that happen at 79 with Clementi though?
NCIH says:
No. That was an interview. 99 percent of fighters don't insult their opponets in the post-interview. Clementi was a rare occurance.
AMP says:
Except Guillard didn't stand there like a little bitch and listen to Clementi. He wanted to kill him.
Diesel says:
I love PRIDE's production, actually. I'm just saying, would it really work if UFC did similar?
Diesel says:
PRIDE used to have the announcer in a man thong beat drums, imagine Bruce Buffer in a thong.
i$e says:
I'm not saying'copy PRIDE', just add a bit more effort into it. I guess I'll be able to tell you what it's like after I'VE BEEN TO ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP 80 : RAPIDFIRE, WHICH I'M ATTENDING LIVE.
Diesel says:
Fair enough. But what UFC are doing currently, is working perfectly, as their buys are through the roof. I don't see them feeling the need to up production value at this moment, since everything is in place and rolling.
NCIH says:
I would much rather have the UFC paying their fighers well, than spending it on more productions.
i$e says:
Thanks for making me look bad, guys.
Diesel says:
I thought Mike was the nub here?
i$e says:
I know what K1-Heroes is, thanks.
i$e says:
I'm running out of time guys. One final question.
i$e says:
Do the honours, 'John'.
Diesel says:
Alright guys, so we've wrapped up 2007.
Diesel says:
Let's look ahead now. What do you guys see in 2008? Certain fights? Will buys still be up? You name it.
i$e says:
I think we'll see Chuck/Forrest down the road.
i$e says:
The Light Heavyweight division will OWN next year, even moreso than this. You have the established guys back and rocking, and a HUGE list of guys waiting for a shot; Silva, Forrest, Jardine, Machida etc
AMP says:
I want to see Chuck Liddell still winning so I can always hear, "the after parties at Studio 54 if you want to hang out" followed by Joe Rogan smiling at the awesomeness that is Chuck Liddell plugging an after-party after getting into a fight.
NCIH says:
Buys will be about the same, I think. Maybe a little higher. As for fights in 2008: GSP/Serra 2, Penn vs Sherk, Liddell vs Thiago Silva, Big Nog vs Gonzaga, Silva vs Griffin, Rampage vs Shogun 2, Anderson Silva vs Dan Henderson, Brock Lesnar vs Tim Sylvia, Fedor vs Couture (hopefully), Matt Serra vs Matt Hughes...
NCIH says:
Luckily, a few of these fights will happen.
AMP says:
I think the Middleweight and Welterweight divisions will take a nice little hit if GSP defeats Serra and Silva defeats Henderson because outside of Fitch for GSP and no one for Silva, there's not too many contenders for the belt.
Diesel says:
I have to agree about looking forward to the LHW division much so. There's so many more fights that need to be made to straighten up some shit. Right now it feels like a bunch of top guys just rambled into a pile.
NCIH says:
I'm just going to throw out a name, to defeat Anderson.....Mike Bisping.
AMP says:
LMAO
i$e says:
Don't be stupid.
AMP says:
Leave plz
Diesel says:
Diesel says:
Door's to the right, Mike.
i$e says:

i$e says:

NCIH says:

AMP says:
Still leave
i$e says:

i$e says:
FUCK OFF.
Diesel says:
Mike, MetalX probably won't even read this. No need to try and verbally blow him with your Bisping talk.
NCIH says:
Oh. I thought that's what we're doing?
i$e says:
'MetalX' wannabe.
i$e says:
This is why you're a guest and not a host, Mike.
AMP says:
Fuck MetalX
Diesel says:
Speaking of...
Diesel says:

i$e says:

i$e says:

Diesel says:

AMP says:
Bruteshot is the fucking man, tbc
NCIH says:

Diesel says:

NCIH says:
BDFW is goods, too.
AMP
Bruteshot should replace Mike
Diesel says:
Honestly. Fuck you, Mike.
i$e says:
Ok, lets wrap it up guys.
i$e says:

AMP says:

Diesel says:
